The Great Western Greenway follows the line of the old Midlands Great Western Railway, which closed in 1937. The Great Western Greenway has been so popular that it has inspired similar ventures all around the country, most notably perhaps, the Waterford Greenway which just surpasses the Great Western’s 42km by 4km! Today more than a quarter of a million people use the Great Western Greenway annually, all attracted by traffic-free natural environment and the ever-changing and beautiful views over Mayo’s mountains, bogs, farmland and dramatic Atlantic coastline. Follow the road as it swings right onto Shop Street and right again onto James Street. At the next cross roads, turn right up Bridge Street and keep in the right hand lane. Take the road into Westport and continue on the one-way system down James Street. Continue straight ahead, go over the Bridge and go straight up Bridge Street in the right hand lane. This route is 66 miles, and should take around 1.5 hours.Īs you approach Westport, go straight through the first set of traffic lights, past the Courthouse (on your left hand side). Follow signs to Westport for approx 10 miles. At Charlestown turn right onto the N5 signposted for Castlebar & Westport. You will pass throught the towns of Tubbercurry, Curry & Charlestown. At the second roundabout take the 2nd exit signposted for Galway & Westport on the N17. Leaving Sligo by the N4 route until the roundabout at Colloney. This route is 49 miles and should take around 1.2 hours. Continue for 18 miles until you come to Westport (then follow the directions from the Ballinrobe Road R330 section on this page). Once you reach the village of Partry (after Ballinrobe) turn left onto the R330 following the signs to Westport. Rejoin the N84 at Ballinrobe and follow the signs for Castlebar through the town centre. Keep straight ahead onto the R334 (signposted for Cong & Ballinrobe) but heading for Ballinrobe. Leave Galway city and follow the N84 to Headford. ![]() This route is 155 miles and should take around 3.5 hours (plus rest stops). Follow the directions as per the N5 Castlebar Road arriving into Westport. Continue forward on the N5 going through the towns of Termonbarry, Strokestown, Tulsk, Frenchpark, Ballaghaderreen & around Charlestown on a bypass. Follow the N4 bypass around Longford, looking for the N5 turning towards Castlebar & Westport. Continue around Mullingar and Longford on the M4 (becoming the N4 approaching Longford). When the M6 (towards Athlone & Galway) and the M4 (towards Mullingar & Longford) divurge, take the M4.
